The Wyoming Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association gathered in Casper on April 14 and 15 for a two-day Intro to AI training hosted at the Courtyard by Marriott. The session, led by Dynaimix AI trainer Dan Callahan, brought together electrical contractors from across the state for a hands-on look at how AI tools are reshaping the way office teams work.
The training followed the Dynaimix curriculum: The Future of Work: AI-Driven Innovations Making Office Workers More Competent and Efficient. Over both days, attendees worked through the fundamentals of using large language models in a practical, business-focused context. Most attendees were already working with ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot in some capacity, with a number of participants using Claude as their primary tool. That mix made for rich conversation about where different platforms excel and how firms can make meaningful decisions about which tools fit their workflows.
What the Room Was Focused On
The discussion across both days reflected where electrical contractors are right now in their AI journey: past the introductory curiosity stage and starting to think seriously about implementation. Questions and conversation gravitated toward AI agents and custom GPTs, with attendees exploring how these more advanced capabilities could reduce repetitive work and extend what their teams can do without adding headcount.
There was also notable interest in Claude Cowork and the forthcoming Copilot Cowork. For a group managing complex field and office operations, the idea of agentic tools that can handle file management and task automation across their existing systems landed as a practical next step, not a distant concept.
The Gift Card Challenge
On day two, Wyoming Chapter NECA raised the stakes with a challenge: two $100 gift cards for attendees who could correctly answer and demonstrate training concepts in front of the room. Both cards found their recipients quickly.
The first attendee earned their card by articulating three of the most important reasons for an organization to establish an internal AI Council. The answer reflected a real understanding of AI governance and why structured internal leadership around AI adoption matters, particularly for firms navigating decisions about tools, data, and workflows across multiple teams.
The second attendee took it a step further. They came to the front of the room and built a custom GPT from scratch, live, that functioned as a delegation assistant. Building a working custom GPT in front of a room full of colleagues is not a small thing. It demonstrated that the training had moved beyond concept and into applied capability.
Both moments were highlights of the two days and a reminder of what happens when training is structured well and the people in the room are genuinely engaged.
What It Reflects About Wyoming NECA
The Wyoming Chapter has long been invested in keeping its members current, not just on code and safety, but on the business and workforce side of running a contracting company. Bringing AI training to Casper, and structuring it around practical application rather than high-level overview, reflects that same commitment.
The conversations that came out of this training, around agents, governance, custom tools, and what is coming next with platforms like Cowork, are exactly the kinds of conversations that help firms move from awareness to action. That is where the real value of professional development shows up: not in what people know when they leave the room, but in what they go back and do with it.
